After announcing plans to step down in July, Ogdensburg City Manager Steve Jellie said he was asked by the mayor to reconsider — and he has.
Jellie told Spectrum News 1 Tuesday morning that he has decided to stay on as city manager a bit longer — now planning to remain until the end of the year, before officially stepping away.
He said the city made significant strides in getting its finances in order, but still has a lot of work to do and tough decisions to make.
Jellie's decision also comes on the heels of a Monday night decision by the city council to not study how the city could safely eliminate its police department and introduce a volunteer aspect to its fire department — things he had been pushing for.
He said there’s too much going on right now for him to just walk away.
“I do believe of the three budgets I will have been present for, this one coming forward is going to be the most difficult, and I don’t want to leave council in a worse position than they already are trying to figure out the numbers. So we’ll be working for the city through the end of the year," Jellie said.
Jellie said he has no plans to stay on longer than the end the year, but will continue on as the city’s fire chief until a replacement is found.
