There's no typical day at the Onondaga County Board of Elections, but these days, they're focused on absentee ballot applications.
"Every application that comes in, we scan in so we have a record of it. And it gets tied to the voter record," said County Democratic Elections Commissioner Dustin Czarny.
What You Need To Know
- In Onondaga County, 27,000 absentee ballot applications are in, which is a record
- They expect 135,000 applications
- If you want an absentee ballot, apply now; you can do it online
They make sure the address and date of birth are correct in the record before processing the application.
"It actually only takes about 30 seconds to get through one if you're doing it right," Czarny explained. "But you have to double check everything, but that being said, when we're expecting 135,000 applications to come in by the end of Election Day, that's a lot of time."
Everyone has an important job here, including those sorting through mailed-in applications. And on any given day, they can receive 400 and up to 1,000. Others are focused on the portal.
"When it comes to the elections, we embrace technology, we embrace change, and that has helped us," Czarny added. "That being said, we're about to go into times we're in mandatory overtime, we have mandatory weekends. We're going to be working as hard as we can to get the job done."
They have 27,000 applications, which is already a record. So, if you're thinking about submitting one, now is the time to do so, Czarny stressed.
"Act early. Apply for your application now," he said. "Get that done with. And when you get a ballot back, cast your vote and send it back [as soon] as possible."
Aside from processing applications, elections inspector classes are also underway here. And the to-do list continues from there.
"All of our 280-plus machines that we have will be hand programmed by our bipartisan teams of technicians," Czarny said. "That will start in the next two or three weeks. We're going to get a certified ballot from the state, we then need to program it, and then we need to download it, and then hand program them into each of these machines."
