The Democratic primary is just days away, and one race in the Southern Tier is crowded with seven hopefuls. It's the race for the 125th district state Assembly seat, which is vacant now that Barbara Lifton has chosen not to run again.

The candidates are Sujata Gibson, Beau Harbin, Lisa Hoeschele, Anna Kelles, Jason Liefer, Jordan Lesser, and Seph Murtagh.

Sujata Gibson is an attorney looking to address institutionalized racism if elected through a green new deal and to de-criminalize, de-militarize, and de-incarcerate New York. In part by creating a jobs program for anyone who wants work to do things like weatherize homes or grow food.

Beau Harbin is a Cortland County Legislator and would work to fight for racial justice and fund education. His plan includes legalizing adult use of marijuana, and fully funding education from universal Pre-K through college.

Lisa Hoeschele is the CEO of Family and Children’s Counseling Services. In light of recent Black Lives Matter protests, she wants to focus on law enforcement training. Also, education to decrease the burden of loan debt on young people.

Anna Kelles is a Tompkins County legislator focusing on protecting the environment, and housing as a human right. She says there is a need to transition to a green economy coming out of the pandemic, and a need to eliminate homelessness.

Jason Leifer is the Dryden Town Supervisor and his priorities focus on the economy. By creating municipal broadband internet and implementing a green new deal. He hopes to increase internet access to communities without it, and hire local tradespeople for projects to protect the environment.

Jordan Lesser is an environmental justice advocate. His focuses are on climate change and education. By standing up for teachers and making schools affordable and funding childcare for all.

Seph Murtagh is an Ithaca City Councillor. He wants to work on an economic recovery plan with the governor, and raise taxes on the wealthiest.

All of the candidates agree one of their top priorities is passing the New York Health Act providing universal healthcare coverage for New Yorkers. The last day to vote for the Democratic primary is June 23.
