Suffolk County District Attorney Tim Sini is set to become the next president of the state's influential district attorneys organization, he announced Wednesday, replacing Washington County District Attorney Tony Jordan.

The District Attorneys Association of the State of New York has been a key group in the ongoing debate over changing New York's criminal justice laws in the state, a pitched debate that is expected to continue into the next year.

“It is an honor and a privilege to be elected to help lead prosecutors across the state at this critical juncture for the criminal justice system,” Sini said. “As president-elect, I will continue to work closely with the pesident and Board of Directors to advocate for legislation that champions public safety. It will be my top priority to continue to push for much-needed changes to the recently enacted bail and discovery laws, as well as a ‘death by dealer’ statute."

Sini was first elected in 2017, replacing the scandal-scarred DA Thomas Spota, who had been indicted and later convicted on corruption charges.

“Tim Sini has shown his dedication to improving the integrity of the criminal justice system as well as his commitment to his fellow prosecutors around the state,” said Jordan, the Washington County DA. “Tim understands that modern technology and new strategies must be utilized to tackle public safety challenges and deliver justice. Tim is always willing to share his knowledge and ideas. I look forward to working with Tim and drawing on his experiences about how we can ensure greater transparency, fairness and accountability within the criminal justice system.”

He will formally replace Jordan in June 2022.
