Linda Lacewell, a longtime advisor and aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, will resign as the head of the state's powerful insurance and banking regulator on Aug. 24, she told staff in an email on Friday.

"It has been a privilege to lead you over the past two and a half years," she wrote in the email to staff. "With a new governor about to take office, it is time for me to move on and make way for new leadership. And so I have resigned my position effective August 24, 2021."

Cuomo is also set to resign the same day.

Lacewell was among the current and former Cuomo administration officials who worked on an effort to undermine the credibility of the sexual harassment claims leveled against Cuomo, according to the report released last week by state Attorney General Letitia James's office.

Those efforts included reading and editing an unpublished op/ed pushing back against the allegations as well as leaking the personnel file of Lindsey Boylan, one of the women who had accused Cuomo of harassment, investigators found.

Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul, who will be elevated to the governorship, has indicated this week officials from the outgoing Cuomo administration who were implicated in the report will not be part of her new administration.

Lacewell, a former federal prosecutor, worked with Cuomo during his time as attorney general and later joined his gubernatorial administration as an advisor and risk compliance officer.
