New York's infection rate on Saturday was at less than 1 percent of the tens of thousands of people who were tested in the last day, Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office on Sunday said. 

New York conducted 67,526 coronavirus tests on Saturday, finding 664 positive cases, a rate of 0.98 percent.

The continued low rate of infections comes as states elsewhere in the country have reopened their economies and seen COVID-19 cases soar over the last several weeks. 

New York City, once an epicenter of the virus, is scheduled enter phase 2 of the reopening on Monday, allowing office workers to return and outdoor dining at restaurants. Most regions of the state are now in phase 3 of the reopening. 

"The COVID-19 pandemic isn't over, and as we reopen New York safely and incrementally, the state government will continue to provide timely information so that New Yorkers can make educated decisions for themselves and their families," Cuomo said in a statement. "Yesterday, less than 1 percent of COVID-19 tests conducted in the state were positive, which means we continue to be on the right path toward defeating the virus."

Fiften people died of the virus in New York in the last 24 hours and 332 people are in intensive care units.
