A bill introduced this week in the state Senate would give tax breaks to the state's frontline workers. 

State Sen. Joe Griffo introduced legislation that would create a state income tax exemption for medical professionals and first responders that are combatting the coronavirus in New York. 

"My bill is one way that we can say thank you to the men and women who get up every day and go about their daily routine despite a significant threat to their own well-being and that of their families,” Griffo said. 

This would include firefighters, emergency medical technicians, law enforcement, and medical staff — who have all been deemed “essential” during the pandemic by New York officials.

“They and their families, along with all essential employees, deserve our gratitude for their efforts and the work that they do during this challenging time," Griffo said. 

There is a similar bill was introduced in Congress by U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga from Michigan. 

The "Heroes Act," would create a four-month federal tax holiday for workers on the front-line fighting COVID-19. This legislation would also include senior care facility staff and pharmacists.
