The organization that controls shipping on the Saint Lawrence Seaway is warning customers that the shipping season will be delayed this year, due to high lake levels.

The Great Lakes-Saint Lawrence Seaway System releasing those details Tuesday, saying shipping channels will open April 1, a full 12 days later than usual.

The seaway system posted the information on its website. Additionally, the information state that due to dry conditions this month, and the record outflows controlled by the Lake Ontario- Saint Lawrence river board, the probability of the lake being above flood levels has decreased to 35 percent.

Meanwhile, no information has been released from the international joint commission and its boards on the decision to delay.

Experts said a delay in the shipping season could cost millions of dollars.
