Republican gubernatorial candidate Marc Molinaro on Monday called on Gov. Andrew Cuomo to agree to a “civility challenge” in the final week of the campaign.

This includes Cuomo yanking negative ads from TV, radio and social media — a move that’s both unlikely to happen and would have the effect of leveling the playing field for Molinaro, who trails Cuomo in fundraising.

But Molinaro added in a conference call it’s also in his “best interest” to attack Cuomo.

The call comes after a shooting at a synagogue on Saturday killed 11 people in Pittsburgh and after a Florida man sent pipe bombs to prominent Democratic leaders and critics of President Donald Trump.

“It just isn’t appropriate and leaders have to lead,” he said of making political attacks. “What I’ve seen and what America has seen just demands leadership.”

Molinaro also said he disagreed with Trump, who on Twitter once again Monday morning called the press “the enemy of the people.”

“It is not OK to call the press the enemy,” Molinaro said. “It is not OK to suggest that people should act out violently. It is not OK to kick people when they are down.”

But he also urged Cuomo to set an example rather than point the finger at Trump.

“That’s exactly the problem. Every time something angry happens, the governor and others point their fingers at other people.”
