HAMLIN, N.Y. — You’re invited to start the new year outside, with a First Day Hike scheduled at parks and trails across the state. It’s become a growing nationwide New Year’s Day tradition.
Hamlin Beach State Park along Lake Ontario is one of dozens of state parks hosting First Day Hikes to get you out and about to enjoy nature this time of year. This hike will start with hot cocoa and treats inside and then it’s a scenic hike on the beach.
"All of our New York State parks are open all year round and the beautiful part of this is that a lot of people don't know that they are open, but there is just still so much to see in the winter," said Kelly Adams, public affairs coordinator for NYS Parks.
Lara Hargrave says she has the best job in the world. She's a NYS Parks environmental educator. She helps people get more engaged with nature.
"We hope with a greater understanding of nature comes a greater appreciation for it. That's what we are all about. We are looking forward to it. It's a great way to start the new year," said Hargrave.
First Day Hikes are free. It's family-friendly fun with plenty of hike options from one to five miles. Participants will get a NYS Parks commemorative bandana.
Eleven First Day Hikes are planned along the grassy Genesee Valley Greenway State Park from Rochester to Filmore. Guides will lead the way along this historical trail.
No matter what route you choose you are sure to enjoy the scenery and the company you will meet along the way.
"You always come away with more than you started with when you take a walk outside," said Hargrave.
