KINGSTON, N.Y. – It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas. That's why volunteer elves at People's Place, a nonprofit in Kingston, were hosting the 52nd Project Santa.
The initiative provides more than 2,000 children across Ulster County with toys, winnter items, crafts, games and other gifts every holiday season.
Parents like Maya Hazan said this is an event she looks forward to every year, citing the difficulty she faces on a low-income salary.
"I’m a single mom of three," Hazan said. "My kids are a little bit older now ...I’m down to my 16-year-old and my 17-year-old, who is not eligible (to participate in Project Santa).”
Despite cold temperatures, Hazan waited in line for nearly an hour, anxious to gather free books, stocking stuffers, games, craft items and other donations she gives to her kids every year.
“It’s helping because I only make $20,000 dollars a year," Hazan said.
As a part-time employee for Kingston High School, Hazan said every little bit helps.
"It’s helping just to make my teen feel good about himself. I have no family, no relatives. I am by myself here,” she said.
Christine Hein, executive director of People's Place, describes Project Santa as a Christmas miracle for thousands of families.
“They get a main toy, they get a few smaller toys, they get a stocking filled with goodies, they get a board game, etcetera," Hein said. "We have scooters, we have skateboards, we have Leggos."
Hein said she and her extensive group of volunteers are eager to help any Ulster County parent in need of support this Christmas.
