It’s known as America’s favorite pastime, but on this field, spectators are traveling back to the 1860s.

“Vintage baseball is baseball played by the rules and in the uniforms of the 1800s. You'll see underhand pitching. You'll see players catching a ball on one hop and that's considered an out. And you'll also see, you know, no gloves whatsoever," said Nick "Roughcut" Frandsen, captain of the Bovina Dairymen.

What You Need To Know

  • Vintage baseball is baseball played by the rules and in the uniforms of the 1800s

  •  There's underhand pitching, catching the ball on one hop and no gloves.

  • There are over 200 vintage baseball teams across the country and nine throughout New York state.

In this game, if a ball is hit into fair territory and then goes foul, it’s still fair. All of the other different rules were standard in 1864.

“As the game progressed throughout the 1800s, you know, the 1880s and 1890s, you start to recognize it as modern baseball," Frandsen said.

There are more than 200 vintage baseball teams across the country and nine throughout New York state.

“It's just more inclusive environment. You know, I grew up playing competitive baseball through high school, but some of our players, they haven't played baseball since Little League. And they come back. They come here and they come for the camaraderie and the fellowship and the community that it brings," said Collin “Stumpy” Miller, captain of Mountain Athletic Club.

These vintage games are teaching people the history of what came before them.

“When we take the field in a place like this, an old hay lot or, you know, these hard scrabble diamonds, I think we honor the past. We honor the men and the women who played this game way back in its formative years. And it just feels like it's we're a part of something greater than ourselves," Miller said.

Vintage baseball teams from across the Northeast will be playing at the 4th annual Cowtown Scramble Vintage Baseball Festival that runs Oct. 5-6 in Bovina Center, New York. For more information visit delcovintagebaseball.org.
