Every community in New York deals with trash. One city looked for a more efficient way to clean neighborhoods.

The City of Syracuse is making some changes to its trash collection schedule, which will impact some people's day of the week they should put their bins to the curb.

“Big, big stress relief off of, all of our backs,” said Ben Kulesa, crew leader for Syracuse DPW’s sanitation department.

What You Need To Know

  • The City of Syracuse is adjusting its trash collection map, which will improve efficiency for crews

  •  Soon residents will be receiving new recycling bins

  • This change impacts the day of the week some people are putting their trash to the curb

It is Kulesa’s job to know the streets of Syracuse. He oversees trash and recycling pickup crews.

“On any given day of the week we're, crew leaders and workers, are spread throughout the entire city,” said Kulesa.

The old map for trash pickup has regions overlapping on different days. The new map brings regions of the city closer together, making pickups more efficient.

“And the city itself is just going to make a little bit more sense on how they pick up the trash throughout the week,” said Kulesa.

This will result in some people putting their trash out on a different day. Currently, recycling is put in small blue bins. But they have some flaws.

“Blue bins can tip over, make a mess. People have to try and retrieve their own bins on their own. The county itself stopped making the little blue bins,” said Kulesa.

A switch is coming to taller carts, which will be easier to pull out of snow banks, hold more items and be tougher to blow over.

“It's going to be a lot cleaner. It's going to be a lot easier to just wheel one bin to the back versus our guys having to pick up two, three, four, five or six recycling bins at any residence and individually tip them all into the back of the truck,” said Kulesa. “This is something that could have happened years ago, and we're just getting with the times now.”

Residents will receive the new recycling bins in October.
