There have been multiple packages containing suspicious substances sent to elections officials recently in Georgia, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Missouri, Rhode Island and now New York state.
Just this week, the New York State Board of Elections (BOE) announced that a package containing a substance, which still hasn’t been identified, was received at the Albany office of the BOE.
The situation is reminiscent of the anthrax posts sent to political leaders and media personalities back in 2001.
It leaves us with plenty of questions: Why are elections officials being targeted? Do the threats have anything to do with the heated rhetoric that we’re hearing during this presidential campaign? What is the suspicious substance?
Kathleen McGrath, director of public information at the New York State Board of Elections, joined Capital Tonight’s Susan Arbetter to discuss BOE’s safety protocols, as well as what officials are doing to prepare for a busy election season.
