Sally Rapoza might start her day off at home, but she’s a social butterfly and right now, she’s calling her ride to the grocery store.

“I like to visit family and I like to be able to get around," said Rapoza, a "GoGoGrandparent" rider.

GoGoGrandparent is a ride-hailing program geared toward older adults that’s available in almost every county in New York.

Seniors call its phone number and are connected to a driver and information needed, such as the driver's name, plate number and arrival time. Rapoza says the best part is the rides are free.

“I live on Social Security and I have a small retirement, but it's not enough. And I struggle every month. So if I had to start adding rides into that, I wouldn't be able to do it," Rapoza said.

Gogo has provided around 1,100 rides to New Yorkers since their partnership with the state began. They work with other companies for the rides like Uber and Lyft, but there’s a difference booking through Gogo instead of other ride-hailing apps.

“Why we partner with GoGoGrandparent is they train the drivers in the unique needs of older adults, and that's really the difference. So you can do Lyft, you can do Uber, you can do Gogo, but if you get a driver through Gogo, they're going to be uniquely qualified to help an older adult," says Greg Olsen, director of the state Office for the Aging.
