ROCHESTER, N.Y. — From Wolf Creek Falls Preserve in Albany to Beaver Meadow Audubon in Buffalo, a Rochester author has written an easy-to-follow guidebook series to get hiking on a trail near you.
If there's a trail, chances are Randi Minetor's hiked it.
"This stretch of Lake Ontario of this beautiful beach is courtesy of who else, George Eastman," said Minetor as she hiked a stretch of Durand Eastman Park in Rochester.
Minetor is all about sharing where she's been so you can go to. This best-selling New York state author wrote a book series, Best Easy Day Hikes, pocket-sized guides of trails in and around Rochester, Syracuse, Buffalo and Albany. There are more than 70 best hikes featured for birders, water views and history.
"The Best Easy Day Hikes books are hikes that anyone can do. If I can do it, you can do it," said Minetor.
Every trail in the book includes a detailed description, a map and a little bit about what you'll see along the way. Minetor is a big birder. That's what inspired her and her husband Nic to go on hikes. They have been to 354 National State Park sites in all 50 states and counting. So what's her favorite?
"I still say New York because New York has everything. We have forests, we have mountains, we have gorgeous seashore and lakeshore," said Minetor. "We have Great Lakes. No one else in this region of the country has Great Lakes and just beautiful, beautiful trails all through the state."
She hopes you enjoy the views and the history along every trail.
Each book includes a list of what to pack on a hike. Safety and preparation are important. Minetor also gives a big thanks to all the volunteers and hiking clubs and trail caretakers. She knows a lot about NYS trails and hiking. She has written 90 books and is planning to write more. You can find Best Easy Day Hikes at Barnes & Noble and Amazon.
