It’s called the Q-Munity bus, and for those in the Queensbury Union Free School District, it’s hard to miss.

“It’s a staple,” said Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Denise Troelstra.

The bright blue repurposed school bus is essentially a classroom on wheels.

“Some of the educational tech that we use are Spheros, which are little, round robots that kids can drive around with tablets,” explained Director of Instructional Activity Ben Grieco. “And then we have low-tech stuff like giant Jenga and Connect Four.”

District leaders say the goal is simple: maintaining a strong partnership between the school and its students.

“It’s an investment from our school district that gives back to the community that sort of takes the educational process and community process out on the road,” Troelstra said.

And it’s an effort that is being well received by students like soon-to-be fifth-grader Lilly Foster.

“It’s just fun to be able to come and do stuff and not sit around all day,” she said.

More than 50 children visited the bus Monday during its first stop of the summer.

“Even though our students are reading books over the summer, we want to make sure we are offering different kinds of activities,” Troelstra said. “And throwing in a little bit of food so we can come together as a community.”
