ROCHESTER, N.Y. —  As temperatures soar in New York this week, it's important to recognize that certain groups are more vulnerable to the heat — particularly the elderly. Health officials say the demographic is at a heightened risk for heat-related illnesses, prompting authorities to urge everyone to keep a close eye on older adults to ensure they stay hydrated and avoid excessive sun exposure.

Heat-related deaths among those over 65 years of age increased by 85% from 2017 to 2021 in the United States, according to the World Health Organization. Preventing serious conditions such as heat exhaustion, heatstroke and dehydration among the elderly is the goal.

What You Need To Know

  • The elderly are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses, and heat-related deaths among those over 65 have significantly increased

  • Key precautions include staying hydrated, avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat, maintaining cool indoor environments, and checking on elderly individuals, especially those in nursing homes

  • Ann Marie Cook highlights the disproportionate impact of heat on older adults and the importance of ventilation, cool compresses, and awareness of symptoms like dizziness to prevent serious health issues

Recommended precautions include staying hydrated, limiting outdoor activities during peak heat hours and maintaining cool indoor environments. It's also vital to check on elderly individuals residing in nursing homes, where air conditioning may be limited.

"The heat disproportionately impacts older adults and people with chronic conditions. Many nursing homes don't have air conditioning, so it's staying out of the sun, opening up some windows for some ventilation, and making sure people have cool compresses or clothes so that they can stay cool," said Ann Marie Cook, president and CEO of Lifespan in Rochester.

As the temperature rises, consider these precautions:

  • Avoid the sun
  • Drink plenty of fluids for hydration
  • Wear loose and light clothing
  • Avoid strenuous activities

Experts also emphasize the importance of listening to your body. If you feel dizzy or unwell, seek medical attention promptly.
