New York state is receiving nearly $158 million in federal funds to support a rebate program that will make homes more energy efficient.

It provides low-to-moderate-income homeowners access to $14,000 in rebates for home projects that boost efficiency.

Advocates say the high costs associated with these projects are keeping many people from upgrading things like electrical panels, wiring and insulation.

Potential savings include $8,000 off an Energy Star-certified heat pump for space heating and cooling, $4,000 off electrical panels and $2,500 off wiring.

“It was groundbreaking legislation that was passed a couple of years ago in the form of our climate act that really set the stage for us to really start to mobilize our resources towards decarbonization of homes and buildings throughout the state,” said Courtney Moriarta, director of single-family residential at NYSERDA.

“This is just a wonderful opportunity for not only our low-and moderate-income state residents, but all our state residents to really make investments in their own homes,” said Deb Peck Kelleher, interim director at the Alliance for Clean Energy New York.

"New York is setting the pace in the transition to modern, affordable, and efficient homes. With this Inflation Reduction Act funding, we continue the transition to an affordable clean energy future that benefits all New Yorkers," Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement.

NYSERDA plans to launch the rebate program in the coming weeks.
