There continues to be an effort to educate young women to fill a void and become qualified to fill positions in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields.

Thursday, the state Department of Transportation hosted a Girls in STEM Pi Day event Clary Middle School in Syracuse. I-81 Project Director Betsy Parmley, along with several other female engineers, were on hand to speaking to the students about the project and the purpose of the construction. There were also hands-on, STEM-related activities.

"We are so grateful to be able to have an opportunity to stand in front of these girls and show them that we're from here, we live here, we work here, we're raising families here as well, and you can do that too," said TeNesha Murphy, an I-81 public information officer for NYSDOT.
