CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. — After more than 100 people were sent to the hospital for carbon monoxide poisoning at Holiday Twin Rinks ice arena in Cheektowaga, Assemblymember Monica Wallace is proposing two bills related to carbon monoxide safety.
“Thank God everyone was OK, but we want to make sure nothing like that never happens again,” said Wallace. “And you might be surprised to learn, I know I was, that carbon monoxide poisoning in ice rinks are actually quite common.”
Bill A8886 would enact regulations at indoor ice rinks, requiring the maintenance, monitoring and recording of air quality devices and their readings. It would also require regular inspections by public health officials and procedures to follow when CO levels rise.
In the event a carbon monoxide detector goes off, fire officials said to evacuate the space immediately and call 911.
Another bill, A5951, would create a month-long tax holiday during October on smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.
If passed, New York would become the sixth state to enact carbon monoxide safety laws.
