America’s state parks are inviting you to get outdoors and connect with nature as part of the annual First Day Hikes. It’s happening at a New York state park near you.
The team at the New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is kicking off its 100th anniversary and has mapped out a bunch of hikes to help you start the New Year outside.
What You Need To Know
- Celebrate the New Year outdoors with a First Day Hike at one of the many events across the state and nation
- This annual event includes options for hikes ranging from self-guided treks to staff, or volunteer-led hikes
- The walks and hikes are family-friendly and typically range from one to five miles depending on the location and conditions
"It is a different perspective and a different vibe than the regular day-to-day in the summer," said Kelly Rife, public affairs coordinator at NYS Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. "It is cool to step outside in the community and go out and enjoy the splendor that the parks have. That’s what we are doing for First Day Hikes."
You just never know what you are going to see along the hike.
"There are eagles flying around in the woods and the marsh," said Conrad Baker, outdoor educator at the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. "Look there, it's a beaver stick."
Conrad Baker is an outdoor educator. He says he has the best job in the world connecting visitors to the landscape and the history from the Great Lakes to the Genesee Valley.
"It’s a terrific place to work and it’s a really fun place to live and interpret for people," said Baker.
New York state is home to more than 180 state parks and historic sites.
