Packages, boxes and bows — are you one of those people who just throw it all into a garbage bag and call it a day? Or do you carefully sift through it all, separating trash from recycling? There might be some items that end up in one or the other incorrectly.
First things first: Do not recycle your Christmas tree. Your respective municipality will help you with that.
Now on to all the other items. Like the holiday shopping rush, the mad dash to keep this out of recycling is underway.
“Fifty to 100 tons is maybe five to 10 more trucks every single day of material,” said Fenna Mandolang, operations manager of Buffalo Recycling Enterprises, LLC.
Mandolang has a handful of props to share the do's and don’ts of recycling this holiday season.
“You can recycle your wrapping paper, your tissue paper, all of that sort of box board paper,” Mandolang said.
Also, toss in mailers that are all fiber. The ones with bubble wrap inside, not so much.
“Any sort of shiny wrapping or tissue paper is not recyclable,” Mandolang said. “Also, if it's filled with glitter and ribbons.
“But it is not recyclable when it’s a cloth bag."
What’s the top item on the naughty list? Electronics, according to Mandolang. They are dangerous to not only the crew who might unknowingly put them into a truck, but also workers at the plant once they arrive.
“Those batteries are very flammable, and they can combust and start a fire,” Mandolang said.
The same goes for batteries in toys. Those pose a big danger at the tipping floor.
“He can scrape an electronic against the concrete floor and start a fire,” Mandolang said.
As for serving platters, if the number in the recycling logo is 1, Mandolang said, it's recyclable. Any other number means it's not.
“If it is a one, it can be recycled. If it is six or any other number, it's not recyclable.”
Paper plates are recyclable, but you're asked to clean them of food first. Disposable cups can be recycled even if a little soggy, Mandolang said.
The lights on your trees or house shouldn't be recycled.
“They end up wrapping around shaves in the plant,” Mandolang said.
Entertaining may mean washing the tablecloth and napkins more often. When you’re done with the detergent bottle, that can go into the recycling bin as well.
