Herkimer College has a new law enforcement training center.
The VirTra simulator provides realistic training to cadets. It's a virtual reality training system designed to help train police officers to respond to active shooter, domestic violence and other high-stress situations. The system also focuses on training in areas like de-escalation, use of force, interacting with mentally ill people, communication and decision-making.
Cadet Theodore Schoff is in his first few months of training at Herkimer College’s Police Academy.
“When I was coming on, I wasn’t really expecting to really go into a simulator type of scenario with this," Schoff said. "I think it’s great. I think it’s going to help us learn a lot more on the street whenever a scenario like this happens. We’ll be ready and we’ll know what to do.”
The nine-month police academy focuses heavily on text work and law. Director of the program, Michael Masi, says having this virtual training center allows them to do more scenario-based training.
“This type of training will make them 100% prepared to deal with the life of a police officer on the street," Masi said. "There’s no question about it. And that’s why it’s enticing to other departments, to police departments on the street in our communities to come in and use the equipment as well.”
Schoff says his sister who is a police officer in Syracuse inspired him to embark on this journey.
“I think my goal is to make sure I’m doing everything the right way on the street," Schoff said. "You know, [my goal is] helping civilians, making sure no problems or bad situations escalate and keep everyone safe from any bad beings whatsoever.”
