Artificial intelligence can be used to generate text, images and even videos.

What You Need To Know

  • AI can be used to generate text, images and videos
  • Experts said the technology was intended to be used for creativity
  • Now they warn people to do their research when they see shocking photos or images, especially heading into election season

Dr. Siwei Lyu, a professor in the department of computer science and engineering at the University at Buffalo, says AI was intended to be used as a creative tool, but has the potential to be used dangerously.

“[Much] of this technology is also developed with a little bit of naiveté in mind,” said Lyu. “The researchers think these are good things; that everybody should benefit from this. We don't really give a lot of thought.”

When it comes to distinguishing real from fake, he said it should not be too difficult. The more accessible generative software tends to appear less realistic. However, it is possible to create convincing imagery with skill and software.

With election season ramping up, Lyu reminded people to do their research before sharing photos or videos of candidates that may appear shocking.

“You know, we saw something. We immediately feel emotions. Anger. Happiness. Curiosity. This basically eclipsed rational thinking,” said Lyu. “Actually, if we sit down in a calm mindset and pay attention to what we are watching, it shouldn't be very difficult for us to see most of the AI synthesized stuff.”
