A new report by AARP shows a troubling trend.
It says prices for 25 prescription drugs have more than tripled since the drugs first entered the market. AARP New York is now asking Gov. Kathy Hochul to sign legislation it says would fix the issue.
The bill, passed by the state legislature, would require a report every time a drug price rises more than 16%. Drug manufacturers would have to tell the state Department of Financial Services the new cost, the future cost, and why the price is rising. Advocates say the cost of these drugs can be devastating for New York's older population.
Bill Ferris of AARP says he's confident Gov. Hochul will sign the bill as it's similar to her own push for drug transparency. He says other legislation in the works includes stopping deals to delay the sale of certain drug brands — and shifting prices to match lower ones in Canada.
