A local high school choir was given the opportunity of a lifetime – to perform as an opening act for the hit band Foreigner Tuesday night at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

Spectrum News 1 caught up with members of the choir at one of their recent rehearsals, where they proved that a small town can have a big voice.

As the sounds of acapella filled the halls of Schoharie High School, students like Lindsay Haverly were getting ready for an unexpected shot at glory.

“I think we just really have this bond in music, like some people find it in sports and stuff like that, but this is just how we connect,” says Haverly, a student at Schoharie High School.

She and her friends in choir were rehearsing a mash up of classic rock songs that they would perform Tuesday night at SPAC, as they were selected to open for the hit band Foreigner.

“You hear about SPAC when you’re younger and everything, and you never think you’ll be performing there, especially for a band like that. So it’s just crazy that we got this opportunity,” Haverly said.

Sixty kids auditioned for the spot, and only 20 were selected. The performance is completely acapella, which Haverly said makes it much harder.

“It's basically just the choir singing on their own. We don’t have any tracks, we don’t have any backups. So it's just us, which means we really have to connect with each other and stay together," she said. "So that's what’s really important and challenging about a group like this.”

Carrie Styles is the choral director for the school. She's worked with the kids all summer. She said the opportunity has impact far beyond her students.

“I think sometimes Schoharie gets this rap as this small town, and I just love it because it shows that students anywhere can make music and be successful,” says Styles.
