As the search continues for the escaped inmate Michael Burham, those nearby say they are concerned. Members of a church just down the street from the Warren County Jail in Pennsylvania that Burham had escaped from continue to come together to pray for not only their safety, but also for Burham.
Just like any other Sunday service, guests come together at Faith Fellowship Church of God.
“One day the Lord just said right out of the blue to me, he said, ‘You're working here,’” associate Pastor Charles Reed said. “He's done. Go to Warren. And I said, ‘Well, that's OK, but you're going to have to convince my sweetheart, my wife, if that’s OK.’”
After spending over a decade with the church, Pastor Dorothy Hilliard has prayed for many, and since the recent escape of Burham, she made sure to not leave anyone out.
“My first reaction is to pray for the community,” Hilliard said. “But my second reaction is to pray for Michael. So I readily pray for people who need him, they need him and they just don’t know it.”
Located just down the street from the Warren County Jail, where Burham was discovered missing from the recreation area Friday morning. Officials say he "elevated himself" onto a piece of exercise equipment and used bed sheets that he tied together to climb down to the ground.
Pastor Hilliard says although she is not afraid, she is concerned.
“I will admit that I locked my doors last night for the first time, and that only because I wasn't afraid,” Hilliard said. “But you don't want to give them opportunities that would not necessarily have to be there.
The latest details revealed by investigators and state officials say they believe he is still within the region after believing to have found campsites and belongings from Burham.
“I'm afraid he’s going to be in a pretty tough situation,” Hilliard said. “I know very little about how things are done in prisons except what you see on TV, which you don't even know how much of that is truthful. I would definitely ask him to turn himself in. And then I would also share the gospel with him and ask him if he would allow me to pray the sinner’s prayer with him. Ask him to be saved.”
As of now, his whereabouts are still unknown. Officials are asking residents to stay safe, be vigilant and call local law enforcement if they see anything suspicious.
Burnham is accused of killing Kala Hodgkin in Jamestown in May, around the same time two fires were set in the city. Police say he also kidnapped an elderly couple in Pennsylvania and forced them to drive him to South Carolina.
It was in South Carolina where Burham was eventually taken into custody and brought back to New York after police say he led them on a search lasting nearly two weeks.
Burham was being held in Warren County, Pennsylvania for the time being to allow the Chautauqua County District Attorney's Office more time to develop their case against him.
Police in Pennsylvania announced Saturday that U.S. Marshals have issued a $7,500 reward and Warren County Crime Stoppers have issued a $2,000 reward for information leading to Burham’s capture.
