Community members in Western New York worked to raise money in the name of a victim of the mass shooting at the Tops on Jefferson Avenue last year.
Hundreds of people came out to take part in a half marathon to benefit the Lt. Aaron Salter Memorial Scholarship.
Salter lost his life protecting people during the shooting last year.
Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown spoke at the race about the continued strength of all families impacted by the event.
"It would have been easy for them to go inward, to curl up in a ball, to be crippled by the pain and anguish of their losses, what they've gone through,” Brown said of the families. “But they have continued to be out in the community. Not only to lift each other up, but to lift the community up and send a very strong, powerful [and] clear message that hate won't win."
