It’s a safe space on campus where students can let their true colors shine. With yellow furniture and colorful walls, the Q Center is a place where everyone can feel accepted.

"For queer students, I think especially in today's world, they really appreciate the space because it is very bright and colorful and welcoming, and there's just so much that they can do in here. They feel empowered when they come in here,” said Nick Martin, assistant director of the Binghamton University Q Center.

The spot that officially opened to students in 2016. It provides resources and educational opportunities designed to make the campus more supportive of all sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions.

"Obviously, it's a very divisive world that we live in, and having a Q Center with dedicated professional staff that are not GA's, are not student staff, I think really shows commitment that the university has to this population," said Martin.

Within the center, Rachel Del Fierro organizes clothes in the "Gender Bender Closet,” a spot meant to make students feel more comfortable with what they wear.

“It has clothes for people to affirm their gender identities. It’s great for trans and non-conforming people, but anyone can come in and take what they want," said Del Fierro, a sophomore at Binghamton University.

For LGBTQ+ students, finding their place on campus can often be a challenge. It’s the goal of Del Fierro that the center can be that answer.

"It's not necessarily that people will be outright discriminatory, but that uncertainty can make it hard for people. So once you come here, it's like a definite thing. You'll be safe here. You'll be welcome. You'll have a great time," said Del Fierro.

While the center is still fairly new, it’s already seeing a growing population of students happy to find a place they can feel at home.

The Q Center also provides internship opportunities and job offerings for current and former students.
