The SU football team continues to roll, coming off a 22-20 win over Virginia in the Dome on Friday night.
The team is now 4-0 and ranked 25th in the latest coaches poll. If you've been to a home game this season, you've probably noticed more fans wearing jerseys and jersey-T's with the names of SU players on them.
Last July, the NCAA adopted a Name, Image, and Likeness policy and that has allowed for the sale of merchandise for certain players.
The policy is really giving some businesses a boost. Of course, the more success the SU has on the football field, the more popular jerseys and jersey-T's are going to be with fans. We stopped by Manny's where you can find jersey-T's of running back Sean Tucker, quarterback Garrett Shrader, or linebacker Mikel Jones.
The general manager said student athletes can choose to be represented by an agency that Syracuse University has a contract with. He said the agency can either reach out to the store or the store will reach out to the agency if they'd like to sell merchandise with a player's name or image on it.
He said the process has gotten easier since the NIL policy was first implemented last year.
"In the beginning you had to negotiate a deal with every single parent and it was difficult to know how to get in touch with some of these folks. But now, with this new agency in place, the players can sign up for it, and they all pretty much have representation now. So, it makes the whole process a lot easier," said Manny's General Manager Mike Theiss.
Theiss said the players receive a portion of the proceeds from sales of merchandise that have their name or image on them.
He says the jersey-T's have been particularly popular this season. They run for $25 a shirt.
Last year for basketball they sold the Buddy Boeheim and Joe Girard jerseys and they've started purchasing plans for basketball season as well.
SU will be back in the Dome this Saturday when they host Wagner. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
