In the wake of the tragic Armory Square shooting, Onondaga County and Syracuse leaders are moving toward a stronger police presence in the downtown part of the city during weekends.

County Executive Ryan McMahon and Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh announced two extra patrols of probation officer teams starting this weekend between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m.

Officials said it's a model they found to be successful in the past, like at the Valley Field Days, or more recently, with the rash of incidents at Destiny USA.

The partnership is something they hope will lead to more peaceful nights in the busy downtown district.

"The goals are to be proactive probation officers visiting various establishments as a deterrent to those who clearly maybe on probation, and as a deterrent to those who may have bad intentions in our business districts," McMahon said.

Walsh added, "I think it's an acknowledgment that the challenges were facing in the city, whether it's downtown or in our neighborhoods, it's all in Onondaga County, and we're dealing with these challenges as a community."

The special Armory Square Downtown Detail team the Syracuse Police provides will continue to serve alongside the added probation officers.
