This weekend, many fire departments across the state will be making an effort to recruit more volunteer firefighters. It's part of the Recruit New York weekend taking place April 23 and 24.
At the Scriba Fire Department in Oswego County, there will be an open house on Saturday which is one of hundreds of events taking place statewide. Stations in several counties are hosting similar open houses, station tours and information sessions.
Departments aren't just looking for personnel to put out fires but rather for staff who can support the overall operation.
Leadership Oswego County is made up of business professionals looking to do good for the community. They're helping local departments in the area recruit personnel, as well.
"There are so many different roles to be played at local fire departments. So, we need not only firefighters we also need emergency medical technicians. We also need folks who are able to assist with fundraisers to get the word out for events like Recruit New York," said Scriba Volunteer Firefighter and EMT Ashley Haskins.
You are encouraged to visit local volunteer fire department websites and social media pages to find out more specific information about this weekend's events.
There are incentives to gain scholarships when you join a volunteer fire department. Volunteers at the Scriba station will be holding their open house this Saturday from noon to 3:00 p.m. at the station on Route 104.
