Rebecca Di Paola, 10, is homeschooled and lives in Marcellus. Her parents are from Italy and moved to the states nine years ago.
“We moved from Italy. It's a tough space, for young people especially,” Fillippo Di Paola, Rebecca’s dad, said.
Learning from home, Rebecca is further along in school. When she’s not studying or doing homework, Rebecca is drawing. But, recently she decided to take on a new project on her own.
“I have a privileged life,” she said. “I have food, I have clothes. Look at me, I’m overdressing for an interview. But the children in Ukraine they used to have that too, but war struck.”
She is selling her artwork to help raise Money for Ukraine.
“I really wanted to help them out because if I was in that situation I would definitely appreciated some money,” she said.
It started on Facebook, but now she’s teamed up with the Marcellus Free Library to be a part of their fundraiser, Art for Ukraine. The library is selling artwork that has been donated by a number of different local artists. Proceeds are going to the Global Giving’s Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund.
“Money helps a lot with that,” Rebecca said. “They can get food, they can buy stuff. It helps. It’s not like money is everything but you know it helps a lot.”
So far, Rebecca has raised more than $300.
In addition to selling her own creations, she has taken on a few requests and is spending all of her time working on this project.
“We keep her working, the more she has to draw for the charity, the less time she has to study. So, It's been a long spring break for her," Fillippo said.
Hoping her art can help more than just the people who look at it.
The Marcellus Free library is hosting an online art gallery for their Art for Ukraine fundraiser. People can pay what they wish to donate and will be available through the end of April.
