Gas prices have, on average, climbed nearly $1 over the past month. And with a ban on Russian oil imports, President Joe Biden says the pain at the pump will only get worse.

This is all as we head into spring break and summer driving season and the cold weather doesn't help.

The U.S. Department of Energy says your gas mileage lower in colder temperatures. To improve fuel economy, they suggest parking your car in a warmer place like your garage when you can. They also suggest not using your seat warmers or defrosters more than necessary, using the recommended oil for cold weather driving and checking your tire pressure regularly.

The Department of Energy says your cars’ fuel economy is 15% lower in 20 degree weather compared to 70 degree weather.

But the bottom line is people need to fill up to get to work school or running errands.

For those of us who do rely on a vehicle to make those essential trips, gas prices are taking a growing chunk out of the budget.

So we wanted to find some ideas to help you save while getting around starting this weekend.

The Department of Energy suggests you plan and combine your regular trips when running errands. It saves time and money because you use more fuel when you repeatedly start and stop your car. It also reduces the distance you travel.

For your commute, they suggest staggering your work hours to avoid peak rush. Or take advantage of carpools and ride share programs.

We've also reported on the savings you can get from buying gas at chain stores like Sam’s Club, Costco and BJ's. Market experts say their prices are typically $0.20 a gallon below the market average.
