The 375-acre New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse have more to offer than just summertime fun.

In addition to plenty of space, there are more than 100 buildings on the site of the State Fairgrounds, and its caretakers are increasingly putting the property to use before and after the great fair is over.

"In 2019, we put on several hundred shows, meetings and other types of events," said Troy Waffner, director of the New York State Fair. "What that does is it keeps cash coming in, it keeps our employees busy, but it also helps use those buildings on a year-round basis, as opposed to just 13 days."

Fifty shows have been booked so far until June, along with some new events this year.

"We have the Cavalcade of Cars, which is basically Syracuse Nationals that’s indoors, a great indoor classic car show," Waffner said. "We have this great volleyball tournament coming. We have the international taste fest. Those are all new shows. Then, we have the classics. You know, the farm show is coming back, the RV show is here."

Waffner said the shows have a widespread economic impact.

"You take the farm show or the RV show or the boat show, and they go to Danella’s, and they go downtown, and they stay in hotels," he said.

The fairgrounds has parking for 25,000 vehicles.

Waffner said the parking is free for the events.
