Debb Parker is a volunteer driver for the Disabled American Veterans in Central New York. She starts her day early picking up veterans and bringing them to the VA Medical Center in Syracuse.

Debb was inspired to give back to veterans after she visited the American Cemetery in France. Moved by the dedication of service members, she wanted to do something to honor them.

After becoming a volunteer with Veterans Affairs, her commitment to do more has only grown stronger. Recently, she took a pilgrimage in dedication of veterans, where she walked 180 miles as a way to help raise money for the DAV. Her goal is to buy a new van for the fleet.

“It’s a really great organization. It’s probably one of the best things I’ve done,” said Parker.

Debb has driven almost 10,000 miles, taking veterans to the hospital. She knows better than anyone how used the vans are. Some have more than 200,000 miles on them and have become unreliable.

Keith Sabine is one of the 20,000 veterans who relies on the transportation service. He served in the Navy and is legally blind.

“The DAV is a lifeline for my independence,” said Sabine.

From the North Country to the Southern Tier, 40 DAV vans provide rides for 14 different counties.

“It’s amazing how appreciative they are for a ride. For all that they’ve done for us, I’m just giving them a ride,” said Parker.

A new van would cost $20,000. Ford sells the vans at reduced costs. Debb has almost reached her goal, but she’s hoping to raise another $5,000 to afford four-wheel drive.

If you want to help Debb out in her fundraiser, there is a GoFundMe running online. You can also make out a check to the Syracuse DAV. Additionally, if you can donate your time, the Disabled American Veterans are looking for more volunteer drivers like Parker.
