Let's review some of Friday night's football action from around CNY.

New Hartford 35, Camden 7

This was a battle of unbeatens, and it looked like a game that would go down to the wire in the first half. But, the home team Spartans dominated in the second half and pulled away to win big and improve to 5-0 on the season.

New Hartford entered the game as the 8th-ranked team in the state in Class B, but didn’t look the part early on. The Spartans turned the ball over three times in the first half, and found themselves in a 7-7 deadlock late in the first half with Camden on the move.

Logan Banek’s interception and long return, though, seemed to take the wind out of the Blue Devils’ sails. And when Alex Collver scored on a fourth and goal play with just seconds remaining in the half, the Spartans had themselves a lead for good.

Alex Collver ran back a kickoff for a touchdown, ran for a touchdown and caught a pair of scoring passes from Dominic Ambrose. Collver is the kind of all-around player that can carry a team to a sectional title.

On the other side, Camden QB Connor Dean gave a gutty effort, throwing for the tying score and also having two touchdown runs called back because of holding penalties. Dean also had an interception in the first half, but in the end, he couldn’t make up the difference as the 18th-ranked Blue Devils dropped their first game of the year.

FM 49, ESM 7

The F-M Hornets had moved into the state’s top 25 rankings in Class A this week, and they looked like a team ready to move up even further.

The Hornets built a 28-0 lead over a program that’s been the pride of Class A over the last couple of decades, and extended that in the second half.

The Spartans showed some moxie by taking the second half kickoff and driving down the field for their first score. But, the ESM defense couldn’t stop F-M star T.J. Conley on fourth down, and Conley’s touchdown run killed any thoughts Sparty had about coming back to win.

The Hornets’ offense looks very similar to the one that longtime coach Paul Muench ran to great success — built on power running, with the team running up to the line of scrimmage out of the huddle.

T.J. Conley, who’s dad Dan had himself quite a college career at SU, is certainly an impressive athlete.

And the Hornets’ defense is stout, led by run-stuffing defensive lineman Jacob Dobricki, who had seven tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble in the win. The Hornets (4-1) look like they’re for real, and should be 5-1 when they matchup with rival CBA in the regular season finale.

In Class A, there was a huge divisional matchup between West Genesee and Auburn in Camillus on Friday night.

The pair of teams are sitting in third and fourth place in their division, so this was an important meeting, especially at this point in the season.

In the first quarter, there was a lot of action, but it was the type of action that makes coaches cringe. The Wildcats and the Maroons both turned the ball over, but West Genesee capitalized with a touchdown pass from River Oudemool to Ben Chamberlain.

Oudemool was just getting warmed up.

In the second quarter, he added another 38-yard touchdown pass to Dominick Burris to take a 14-0 lead. Burris finished his day with three touchdowns as the Wildcats rolled to a 40-8 win over Auburn.

With the win, West Genesee improves to 2-2, while the Maroons moved to 3-3.

Next week the Wildcats will go toe-to-toe with CBA, while the Maroons will square off with F-M.
