WESTFIELD, N.Y. — It has been months since the toll booths on the New York State Thruway were in use. Now, the final toll booth has been removed.

Demolition was carried out at exit 60 in Westfield, Chautauqua County, just east of the Pennsylvania border.

The state committed to cashless tolling last year as a way to modernize travel along Interstate 90.

The cost of removing 50 toll plazas and hundreds of booths across New York in favor of gantries over the thruway that can scan E-ZPass tags and license plates was $355 million.

The full project is expected to be completed by the end of October.
