Some have noticed fewer animals at the New York State Fair during its first week, leading fairgoers to wonder where they are.

The dairy cattle building, beef cattle farm and horse barns at the New York State Fair are nearly empty. While some animals will be joining the fair soon, most pigs, rabbits and guinea pigs will not make appearances this year, according to State Fair Director Troy Waffner.

He said the arrival of some animals has been delayed by other competitions, and 4-H, which usually brings a lot of animals, is not participating this year because there wasn't enough time to plan the logistics of moving them.

“It’s just difficult to make all that happen in a short period,” Waffner said.

During an average year, there are normally 10,000 animals at the fair. It's a part of the fair that puts smiles on people's faces.

On Tuesday, fairgoer Rebekah Oldenburg was disappointed to see nearly empty barns.

"Coming into this barn was sad," she said. “We drove and hour and a half to get here because it’s been a long time, so we are going to see what we can, but, you know, for these kids, I wish there was more.”

Still, there are plenty of chicken, ducks and geese enjoying the Fairgrounds, and more animals are expected to arrive at the fair later this week.

Fairgoers can still see racing pigs each day at the Family Fun Zone, and while the fair waits for more cows, the cow-birthing tent is up and running.

Horses will arrive at the fair for their first show on Sunday.
