Taking a summer trip soon? AAA says not to rely too much on your car’s fuel economy display the next time you need to fill up, or you could run out of gas.

In a new study, AAA says dashboard fuel economy displays can sometimes be inaccurate.

This can create an unnecessary risk of people running empty if they over rely on these displays.

Many different factors can throw off a cars fuel economy, like what speed you’re driving and whether you’re driving in the city or on the highway.

AAA says running out of gas can also damage your car.

"It can damage your fuel pump and cause other problems to your vehicle, so it's not just a matter of running out of gas on the side of the road, it's actually maintaining the vehicle and keeping it in good condition, so letting the gas get that low is never a good idea," Elizabeth Carey, director of public relations at AAA, said.

AAA says you should fill up when get down to a quarter tank of gas.
