Many people who live near the viaduct are concerned about their own welfare once the demolition of the 1.2 mile-long stretch eventually begins.

On Friday, the Syracuse Housing Authority took part in a closed meeting with the DOT at the Toomey Abbott Towers, which sits right near the viaduct. Several officials from local and state governments worked with residents to outline their major concerns.

“My main concern would be for those who already have health concerns here,” Anthony Hines-Tecoy, Toomey Abbott Tenants Association president, said. “With the tearing down of the I-81 structure, how would our residents be protected from all of the pollutants that could cause even further health hazards?”

Residents also fear being displaced due to construction or gentrification.
