Food, baby formula and information are on the table at the Massachusetts State-Wide Community Baby Shower in Worcester.

“A lot of people feel like they need help, and they struggle to find those contact points and because they don’t ask, and they aren’t actively out there looking for help and they feel stigmatized," Nicole Broushet, baby shower organizer and founder of Glo Mom said.

Broushet said the city and other community organizations teamed up to point new moms needing help in the right direction. Experts were there to talk about topics like breast feeding, diet and mental health. A study by Brigham and Women's hospital found 1-in-3 new moms of the more than 1,000 surveyed between May and August of last year reported, significant levels of depression.

“Postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, they have been on a rise and we are seeing a large influx of people who are dealing with mental health issues, family connection, bonding and different things so we just wanted to be a community resource," Broushet said.

Broushet said food insecurity is also a concern for new moms but there is help, like the support group at College Seventh-day Adventist Church in South Lancaster.

“They can access a diaper pantry, they can get access to food and to toys and books and all kinds of resources, they can talk to someone if they are dealing with anxiety or depression," Broushet said.
