BUFFALO, N.Y. — With all adult New Yorkers now eligible for to receive the COVID vaccine, we’re seeing more and more people ready to get back to normal with full immunity.

But will they need an additional booster shot in the future?

According to Dr. John Sellick, a Kaleida Health epidemiologist, many medical experts expect the effectiveness of a vaccine to wear down over time. How much time still remains the question.

Sellick says that, so far, both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines have not shown the need for an additional booster shot six months in.

But companies are still thinking ahead.

Dr. Sellick says companies are already working on modified versions of their vaccines to account for variants that could work as boosters, and possibly to stay effective in our system longer.

“Whether it’s going to be annually like a flu shot, or again I think many of us are hopeful that with what we’ve seen so far with these vaccines, we’re gonna go longer than with what we get from a flu shot. And you know, the other big piece of this is, maybe the thing that we need to do is change the technology of our flu shots to what we’re doing here, so everything goes longer,” Dr. Sellick said.

With variants of the virus still developing, medical experts continue to push for everyone to get the vaccine, to not only help yourself, but others, as well.
