Some great news for all those young readers out there - The Oneida Indian Nation recently published its second children's book called, "The Robin Legend."
This new book is entirely illustrated by Nation Clan Member Chelsea Jocko. "The Robin Legend" tells the story of how a robin learns to fly again and how it gets a red chest.
The Nation has been working in partnership with Madison-Oneida BOCES while the book follows what is known as a rebus format. It features Oneida text and the full English translation, as well as phonetics and pictures for the Robin character.
Nation officials say it's important for young generations to understand the language. They say preserving the language is so important.
"It's truly indigenous to this region. And, it's a part of this region. So, it's imperative to keep that language alive for the future generations and for all that come after us," said OIN Member Outreach and Advocacy Coordinator Derek Montroy.
As part of Native American Heritage Month in November, the Nation published its first book called, "The Legend of How the Bear Lost His Tail."
Montroy says both books will continue to become more available in schools and libraries in Central New York soon, especially in Oneida and Madison Counties.
