A New Year's resolution to become healthier can be a bit overwhelming, especially during a pandemic. But there are a few easy steps you can take to make fitness fit in your life.

Step one is choosing healthier foods.

"It always starts in the kitchen; a lot of people say it's 70% of the results that you get from fitness," said certified personal trainer Jeremy Long.

You can't convert your whole routine overnight, so step two is setting goals. Choosing a goal too lofty and not achieving it could lower your confidence.

"Smart goals is what we like to call them — specific, measurable, things that are attainable, that are relevant and that are timely too," said Long.

Step three is to display your goals so you don't forget them.

"Don't let COVID shy you away from getting towards those goals. Make sure that you have your goals written out, making sure that you see them every day; put them on the door, put them on the mirror," said Long.

Step four is to get moving. You don't have to get to the gym for workouts. Get creative with what's in your home.

"Push-ups and sit-ups and body weight squats, there's so many ways that you can stay active even in your own home," said Long. "You can use things like grocery bags and filling them with canned goods, or filling a suitcase up with books, or backpacks or anything like that anything to provide a little bit of weight and challenge the muscle a little bit more."

Step five? Don't give up. It's OK to miss a day of healthy eating or exercising.

"Just don't stop' just take everything one day at a time," said Long.
