Meghan Tentinger picked her daughters up after another day of school. Audrey and Maura are part of the inaugural class at Saint Albert the Great Academy.

What You Need To Know

  • St. Albert the Great Academy opened this fall and is nearly at capacity

  • The Tentinger family wanted their daughters to attend school in-person every day

  • Meghan and her daughters stay with extended family in Auburn during the week. Her husband stays and works in Broome County

The Catholic school has welcomed nearly 100 students since opening this fall, filling the void created when St. Joseph's closed.

“We wanted the girls this year to have some sense of normalcy, and so their school was going to be able to be open two days a week," said Tentinger. "And we just felt that this was a big opportunity for us.”

After school, it’s time to head home, even though this home is new to the family. They live in Broome County. Over the summer, the Tentingers decided their daughters needed to go to school every day, so during the week, Tentinger and her daughters stay with family in Cayuga County.

“You know, we had this opportunity, and I just thought everyone’s making a lot of sacrifices due to COVID and we should make some sacrifices, too,” said Tentinger.

Audrey is in first grade. She’s learning how to read and subtract. Maura, in fourth grade, is already an avid reader. She benefits from the community at school.

“My favorite part would be seeing my two boy cousins almost every night,” said Maura.
