October is dedicated to raising awareness through Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Thursday, many are making a special effort by wearing purple as part of "Purple Thursday."

Officials with Vera House say we all probably know someone who has been a victim of physical violence. Statistics show 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have been a victim of physical abuse during their lifetime.

Wearing purple shows support for victims, but may also encourage someone to get the help they need.

Officials say far too often the violence is not reported until it's too late.

"You may not want to reach out to Vera House, but consider talking to a friend. And, we let people know that if you're a friend of someone or a family member of someone that you might suspect is a victim of physical violence, just start a conversation," said Vera House Marketing and Communications Director Chris Benton.

Vera House does have a 24-hour crisis support hotline if you'd like to talk to someone about what you're going through when it comes to physical violence.
