University of Kentucky Athletics announced Wednesday the Wildcats will host the Longhorns Jan. 30 at Rupp Arena, which will be only the third meeting ever between the two schools.
This announcement is the first official confirmation on the revised 2020-21 UK men's basketball schedule. UK has not released its new 2020-21 schedule after the NCAA Division I Council approved moving the first contest date in Division I men's basketball to Nov. 25; however, the school said the full schedule is expected to be released soon.
Dec. 29 and 30 are the new start dates for the conference schedule, as established by the Southeastern Conference. UK will have nine nonconference games, including the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.
This year marks the eighth season of the annual challenge between the SEC and the Big 12, and the sixth straight year where all 10 games of the challenge are played on the same day. Also on the same day, the four SEC teams not participating will play each other in conference games.
Of the SEC's 14 teams, 10 will participate in this year's challenge against all 10 of the Big 12's institutions, each conference hosting five games apiece.
Last year, the two conferences went 5-5 in the challenge. The leagues are 20-20 vs. one another over the last four seasons.
Winning three straight games in the event, Kentucky is 43 in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge. Just last season, the Wildcats defeated the Texas Red Raiders 78-76 in overtime.
Kentucky's last meeting with the Longhorns, however, took place Dec. 5, 2014 in Rupp Arena during the SEC/Big 12 Challenge's third season. The Wildcats prevailed 63-51. Before that, their only other matchup was in December 1993 for the Maui Invitational, where UK also won.
Last season Texas was 19-12 and 9-9 in league play.
