MANLIUS, N.Y. — We can all keep some important safety tips in mind when it comes to preventing a fire.

October is known as Fire Prevention Month, while this week fire officials are stepping up to issue reminders nationwide during Fire Prevention Week.

This week, the National Fire Protection Association is doing all it can to remind us about the simple things we can do to prevent a fire.

Fire officials at the Manlius Fire Department told us they respond to a number of fires each year and, in many cases, they find out it was something small that easily could have been prevented.

In 2020, the campaign is focused on kitchen safety. We need to remember not to leave the stove or oven unattended while cooking. It's also important not to leave items near a flame, or anything that may easily catch fire.

The National Fire Protection Association recommends homes should have smoke alarms installed inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. So that means a two-story, three-bedroom house needs a minimum of five smoke alarms.
